West Side Story Documentary: Virtual Screening
Join us for a virtual screening of a new documentary: West Side Story, "The True Story of How Four Gay Men Created America's Greatest Musical". Written and directed by David LaFontaine, a West Side Story historian, this documentary tells the story of four creative geniuses: author Arthur Laurents, choreographer Jerome Robbins, composer Leonard Bernstein, and lyricist Stephen Sondheim. All four were gay men, and they were inspired by their shared dream of finding a time and place where they could be free to be themselves and love the person of their choice. The true story of how West Side Story came to be created is as inspiring as the iconic musical itself, which has captivated audiences around the world for nearly seventy years.
Following the film screening, there will be a short discussion with writer and director David LaFontaine; Richard Schneider, Editor-in-Chief, The Gay and Lesbian Review/Worldwide; and Sally Hoffman, Professional Tutor, Massasoit Community College.
The larger initiative of producing a series of documentaries about LGBTQ literature will be presented. Members of the audience will be invited to share ideas about how to secure funding for future documentaries.
