The First of December is a day of immense significance to the people of West Papua. It is the day they celebrated their independence from the Dutch in 1961. Almost immediately West Papua was invaded by Indonesia, who have been violently occupying, extracting resources, and oppressing Papuan people and culture ever since.But every year on December 1, Papuan people across the country and the global diaspora mark the day by raising the Morning Star flag and declaring that one day West Papua will again be independent and free.
Join us in Magandjin/Brisbane to raise the Papuan flag, show our solidarity with our oppressed neighbours, and hear from speakers about the situation in Papua and the movement for freedom there.
