The City of West Hollywood presents Artists & Icons

A conversation with Nancy Baker Cahill

Wednesday, October 16, 2024, 6-7:30pm

Nancy Baker Cahill is an interdisciplinary artist and expanded filmmaker working across augmented reality (AR), immersive video, blockchain, sculpture, and graphite drawing focused on systemic power and imagining more equitable futures. Her public art practice aligns with the tradition of ecofeminist land art and emerging scholarship regarding ecological imagination, often highlighting the climate crisis, civics, and body autonomy. For this Artists & Icons event, Baker Cahill discusses her new exhibition, Body Politic, on exhibit on the digital billboards on Sunset Boulevard from October 1, 2024 – February 28, 2025. A conversation between Baker Cahill and a special guest will cover themes of body sovereignty, data rights, voting rights, and basic human rights.

Body Politic, a ten-minute video artwork, will be on view simultaneously at the top of every hour on multiple digital billboards on the famed Sunset Strip in the City of West Hollywood from October 1, 2024 through February 28, 2025. The digital billboards are located at 8775 Sunset Boulevard (Sunset Spectacular billboard), 8743 Sunset Boulevard (Invisible Frame billboard) and 9157 Sunset Boulevard (Streamlined Arbor billboard). The second part of the work will exist in augmented reality, 3-dimensional space, above the billboards at 8775 Sunset and 8743 Sunset Boulevard.

Nancy Baker Cahill is an interdisciplinary artist and expanded filmmaker whose hybrid practice focuses on systemic power, consciousness, and the human body through ecological thinking. She creates research-based immersive experiences, video installations, and conceptual blockchain projects rooted in the history of drawing. Her monumental, augmented -eality (AR) artworks extend and subvert the lineage of land art, often highlighting civics and a desire for more equitable futures. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of 4th Wall, a free, AR public art platform exploring site interventions, resistance, and inclusive creative expression.

Her work is held in the collections of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; The Museum of Art and History, Lancaster, CA; RFC Art Collection, Miami, FL; and 0x Collection, Prague, CZ.
