Although he's often been compared to Keith Whitley, he, like many hard-bitten road warriors, has spent much of his life traveling, busking, and fighting his inner demons, including an addiction to drugs. Ironically, he was once filmed outside a Walmart busking while still an addict. The video went viral, and ever since, he's been making his mark by sharing songs that describe tales of heartbreak, survival and sheer perseverance.
"Most of the time, I draw from personal experience," Shipp replied when asked where he gets his songwriting inspiration. "Sometimes I'll hear a phrase, write it down and come back to it later. It's different every time. Sometimes, I'll write the chorus or a hook first and base everything around it. Sometimes it'll be in a text message with another songwriter buddy."
His covers of Keith Whitley's songs have been shared by the Whitley family on their social media platforms multiple times. He draws from other influences as well, including Don Williams, Hank Williams Jr and Randy Travis. "I was always into music," Shipp said. "I learned how to play guitar fairly quickly as a teenager and from then on just fell in love with playing and singing."
