Welding: Build Your own Firewood Rack

Gain hands-on welding skills and build your own take-home custom firewood rack! Participants will learn how to cut, drill, grind, and weld.
About this Event

Learn to weld with us! Get hands-on instruction and learn to cut, drill, grind, and weld metal by creating a customizable firewood rack to take home and use. All materials provided including local rough sawn red oak lumber for a 4' x 4' single row firewood rack. Materials for a larger rack can be arranged with the instructor ahead of time. Not only will you go home with a super sturdy firewood rack, but also the fundamental knowledge and skills to take on simple welding projects.

Participants will be guided by experienced fabricators Tim Pilewski and Keenan Phillips. Each participant will start with a stock piece of rectangle steel tube 4'. Participants will can expect to:

• Drill several holes with a hand drill and small drill press,
• Make a dozen cuts with a variety of methods including angle grinder, sawzall, metal bandsaw, abrasive chop saw, and cold cut chop saw
• Weld all the pieces together to form 4 corner brackets using stick, flux core, and MIG methods.

Guidance on protective metal finishing options will be provided, but not actually done in the class. You may have time to slide together the provided wood and metal brackets, but might need to disassemble it to transport it home without a larger vehicle.

What to Wear / Safety Notes: NON-SYNTHETIC & non-flammable clothing like denim, wool, or canvas. Closed-toed shoes, pants that cover shoe tops, long sleeve shirt or jacket to put over shirt.

Skill Level: This class is for beginner, intermediate, and advanced skill levels.

Age Requirement: Participants must be 18 or older.

Important Workshop Details

• Attendees should arrive 15 minutes early to check in.
• Refunds are only allowed until 72 hours before the event.
• Bathrooms and refillable water stations are available on site.
• If a class does not reach a sustainable capacity, the instructor may cancel up to 48 hours before the event. In that case, all attendees will receive a full refund.
