About: Rhona Byrne’s Welcome Voyage commission includes two artworks at key entry points to the new Building 75 development at the University of Southampton’s Highfield Campus, exploring what it means to arrive, belong and be welcome.

Central to the project are ship cradle forms as sculptural thresholds at the University Road entrance acting as metaphors for care, support and hospitality. Through exploratory “Welcome Voyage” walks and collaboration with the Maritime Engineering Department, the project investigates movement through water and how hydrodynamic behaviour can be translated into computational patterns and paving designs for the Burgess Road entrance.
