Welcome to the Mournes - Discovery Series - Pierces Castle Loop

This hike can either be completed as a stand alone adventure or as part of our Welcome to the Mournes Discovery Series.

This is the perfect hiking series to discover all the magic the Mourne Mountains has to offer.

The series will start off with 3 beginners hikes which are the perfect introduction to hiking in the mountains. Perfect for those wanting to get into hiking but arnt quite sure where to start.. or for those who would like a more gentle hike whilst discovering lesser known areas of interest in the lower levels of our magestic Mourne Mountains.

Then we will finish off the series with a more advanced hike for those who wish to uncover the granite mining history of the Mournes in the outdoor museum on

⛏️ Chimney Rock Mountain - 18th June

This looped walk in the lesser explored Western Mournes begins and ends at Leitrim Lodge car park… one of the locations for the filming of the Game of Thrones.

The route will begin with a gradual climb along a mountain track to the magnificent Torrs of Pierce’s Castle. Once we have taken in the breath taking views, our adventure will continue where will discover more hidden gems of the Western Mournes including Altataggart mountain and Tornamrock.

This hike is suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and a bit of determination. We will take it at a pace suitable for everyone and will support and motivate you every step of the way!

Start and finish: Leitrim Lodge Car Park

Distance: 6km

Total Ascent: 400m

Approx Time: 3-4hrs

Level: Beginner

Terrain: rocky track, open mountain, single track, boulder field, river crossing, forest, uneven pathless terrain

Can I go on my own?

Of course, there are lots of people that join our events on their own, it won’t be long until you are making new mountain mates!

What you will need to wear:

Suitable footwear- this includes walking boots or waterproof hiking/mountain running trail shoes

Walking trousers or leggings (no jeans/cotton)

Insulating layers such as fleece or wool and a jacket

What you will need to bring with you:

Small backpack

Waterproof jacket and trousers

Hat and gloves

Water and snacks

Are you ready for an adventure? You will get a guided hike with qualified and experienced mountain leaders who are outdoor first aid trained and will be carrying first aid and emergency equipment for your safety.

We are dog normally dog friendly however unfortunately no dogs are permitted on this walk by request of the land owner.

IF WE CANCEL OR POSTPONE an event for any reason, you will have the option of:

1. Completing your activity on a rescheduled date

2. Receive a full refund.

IF YOU CANCEL:

If you notify us with over 14 days notice of the event start date credit will be given that you can use against other events. Within 14 days notice of an event there is no credit given and we do not offer exchanges/transfer of your ticket onto another event.

Please note: Due to the nature of the events we provide and the environments these take place in, hikes will not be cancelled simply because of bad weather. However they will be cancelled by us if bad weather deems the event dangerous. In this instance we will get in touch to notify you. Hikes are subject to minimum group numbers being reached. In the event that this does not happen, you will be notified and offered a full refund, or the opportunity to be transferred onto a different event.
