Third time's a charm! Join us for our third monthly swing dance class series. Whether you're a complete beginner or want to build on your existing skills, we have something for you!
Join one of these lesson series and/or attend the practice lab. Each level consists of 4 weeks of lessons that progressively teach and improve your skills week after week.
March lessons will be every Wednesday, starting on March 1st.
CLASSES
For March, the sessions being offered are:
? Lindy Hop Level 1 ?
Learn the basics of the style of Lindy Hop danced by Frankie Manning in the Savoy Ballroom back in the 1930s & 1940s! This series will bring you from beginner to dancer in no time!
In this series, you'll learn the "swing out on 2" as danced by Frankie Manning, swivel steps for the follower and fun new moves besides the swing out that you can add into your dance. Watch this video to see some of the steps you'll be learning:
If you took Level 1 last month, take this to reinforce what you learned and continue your journey with new moves and steps.
If you've never danced Lindy Hop before, don't worry! Trevor & Deb will teach you how to quickly pick up this iconic style of the dance.
? Lindy Hop Level 2/3 ?
Want to take your existing Lindy Hop to the next level? In March we'll focus on learning new moves and how you can create your own moves.
Take this class if you're comfortable dancing both 6-count and 8-count Lindy Hop and want to learn and create your own moves & style.
This class will be taught as a mixed-level class with the core material aimed at intermediate dancers and bonus material for more advanced dancers. Taught by Trevor Wolfgang and Deb Hall.
? Pratice Lab (Lindy Hop & Balboa - All Levels) ?
Need help on your Lindy Hop technique? Want to learn or improve your Balboa?
Come to the practice lab where you'll be able to practice with others and get personal training from our teachers. No partner is required to attend, and it's free if you attend a class.
SCHEDULE
Classes are every Wednesday night in March from 7-10p. Each class will be 1 hour. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early, so we can start on time.
The schedule is:
? 7p Lindy Hop Level 1
? 8p Lindy Hop Level 2
? 9p Practice Labs (Lindy Hop & Balboa - All Levels)
For those who attend Lindy Hop Level 1, the front room will be open from 8-9p to practice what you learned.
COST
Individual classes are $12 each, or $40 per level for the entire month. The practice session will be free to anyone who takes a class, or $5 for others.
Buying the entire month is highly recommended. Since these are progressive classes, you must attend one of the first two classes to attend the remaining classes in the month.
LOCATION
Lessons and the practice lab will be at LEAF Global Arts Experience at 19 Eagle Street on the corner of S Market St in downtown Asheville. Enter using the entrance on the corner.
If you used to attend the Swing Asheville dances at The BLOCK, the entrance is directly across the street.
There is parking on the street and free city parking lot 2 blocks away on Marjorie St between S Spruce St and Davidson Dr.
COVID POLICY
Masks recommended, but not required. If you bring a partner, you'll have the option of staying with that partner; otherwise, we'll be rotating partners. If you have cold, flu or Covid symptoms, please stay home and we'll issue you a refund for the class.
ABOUT THE DANCES
Both Lindy Hop and Balboa are swing dances.
Lindy Hop is a more open style that can be "hoppier". It was invented in Harlem, NY and is the dance most people think of when you hear the term "swing dance". You can see an example of people social dancing Lindy Hop here:
Balboa is a closer style. It was invented in Balboa, CA in crowded ballrooms where there wasn't much room to dance. "Pure Bal" is danced in a close embrace, where you are dancing chest-to-chest with your partner, while "Bal Swing" opens up some, though not as much as Lindy Hop. You can see an example of people social dancing Balboa here:
In general, if you learn Lindy Hop, you'll be able to dance with a wider range of people, since many other dances use similar movements to Lindy Hop. Balboa, by contrast, requires learning the specific footwork, but it's easier on the knees and can be danced more comfortably at higher tempos.
