Weekend Martyr is a project founded in 2019 by Riccardo Prianti and Elia Lazzerini. The group records its first album "Weekend Martyr" at Niccolò Mazzantini's Orfan
Records (Appaloosa) released by Aloch Dischi. The album features tracks recalls
psychedelic atmospheres with a punk attitude. The result of low-fi recordings and
homemade experimentation, thanks to studio production the band manages to
range from garage rock to a skewed folk, all mediated by a glam aesthetic that
emphasizes by contrast the dark nature of the lyrics. In 2021 the second record
"Wires" a self-production made at Yeti Studio also released with Aloch Dischi.
During the recording through a more significant use of synths, the songs reach a
greater layering of sound: 70s organs and distorted pianos characterize a garage
rock dragging it towards acid and psychedelic sounds, now a distinctive formula of
the band. They are back in 2023 with a new album "Gastrin" recorded, produced
and mixed by Marco Fasolo (Jennifer Gentle, I Hate My Village), out with Gigia
Booking and Cruel Records, recorded at Big Tree Studio and mastered by Riccardo
Zamboni. With this record the band radically changes its artistic direction, marking
a turning point toward a new musical dimension. More pained and visceral, dictated
by a minimal and gloomy nature that gives way to visionary songs and more restless
tracks of a post-punk nature, the songs on the record encapsulate the essence of
the project, offering a sound that travels from the 70s to the alternative of the 90s.
The record consisting of 8 tracks that moves on different musical layers ranging from
an initial aggressive and direct sound to the minimal and introspective tones of the
last songs, which evoke a dimension of pure psychedelia thanks to the obstinate
riffs in mantra rhythmics. In anticipation of the upcoming release of the album
"Gastrin" in January 2024, the first single "Lighter" accompanied by a video clip
made by Giacomo Laser and Giulia Del Piero in October 2023. The video "Lighter"
reprises a great classic among music videoclips: "More than words" by Extreme.
The idea is that the lighter represents the key to discovery, the light that generates
the shadows in the "Platonic Cave". If in the original video the lighter is mocking the
romantic ballad, in Weekend Martyr's video it becomes a shadow that wanders
around reversing the roles of the initial mocking, making us ask: What purpose is
served by the new, what purpose by the old? What shadows are we guided by? And
if we cross the line, who walks with us? Here is the unmasking: the lighter illuminates
the lie of the music, and what is left out of the shadows are just deformed bodies
tossing back pus.In December, the second single "Scammed" will be presented -
with cover artwork by Luca Tanzini (Agenzia di Viaggi Interplanetaria). This song
represents the ironic tip of the record, narrating the feeling of being "scammed" that
derives from living in a provincial town. In fact, although the lyrics suggest the idea
of a possible revolution, the ending actually reveals an unwarranted optimism,
culminating in the exhaustingly repeated phrase, "I'm so dumb," emphasized by
Beach Boys-esque choruses that increase the overall sense of ridiculousness. A live
studio session of "Stunned" will also be published following the album's
release, video footage is by Marco Zaninello. The band currently features Giulio
Maria on bass, proposing a power trio with Riccardo Prianti on guitar and vocals,
and Elia Lazzerini on drums. Live shows are the dimension in which the band is able
to give its best by offering an engaging show, reduced to the essentials, which fully
enhances the sound of the project. The group over the years has had the pleasure
of sharing the stage with bands from the Italian underground and beyond, including
Indianizer, Gianni Giublena Rosacroce, Jennifer Gentle, Deux Control, Cacao,
Appaloosa, Campos, Alessandro Fiori, Serena Altavilla and the Monster Watch
(Seattle).
