Wednesday Lecture: "Martin Schongauer, Michelangelo, and the Torment of Saint Anthony"
Schedule
Wed Apr 22 2026 at 12:30 pm to 01:30 pm
UTC-05:00Location
Kimbell Art Museum | Fort Worth, TX
This talk addresses Martin Schongauer’s engraving "The Torment of St. Anthony," the printed source of Michelangelo’s first known painting. Likely one of the first prints the German master made during his early experimentations with the medium, it would go on to be one of his most influential—inspiring Hieronymus Bosch and Matthias Grunewald, in addition to Michelangelo and many others.
Paying close attention to the material and compositional innovations of Schongauer’s work and the context in which it was produced, this talk offers insight into the rich prehistory of the Kimbell’s painting.
This free lecture takes place on Wednesday, April 22, at 12:30 pm and lasts one hour. No registration is required. Learn more: https://kimbellart.org/event/wednesday-series-art-context-27
