Hand-Building, Wheel Throwing & Sculpting with Sue Goodwin
Wednesday Afternoons | 12:30pm – 2:30pm
10-Week Term - July 8th - Sept 9th
📍 The Studio, Cleveland
Build confidence across hand-building, wheel throwing, sculptural ceramics, and surface decoration in this supportive and unhurried 10-week course guided by ceramic artist and teacher Sue Goodwin.
Originally from South Africa and now based in Brisbane, Sue brings more than 40 years of experience working with clay, alongside decades of teaching both adults and children through her own studio practice. Mentored for over 27 years by South African Master Potter Digby Hoets, Sue’s teaching combines strong technical foundations with encouragement for personal creativity, exploration, and individual expression.
Held within the warm and welcoming environment of The Studio in Cleveland, this course welcomes both complete beginners and continuing students wanting to deepen their skills and confidence across a range of ceramic techniques.
Sue works across both functional and sculptural ceramics, with a love for wheel throwing, handbuilt form, glaze experimentation, texture, slips, and surface decoration. With a background in graphic design and painting, she also brings a strong understanding of composition, detail, and visual storytelling into her teaching.
What You’ll Learn
This is an unstructured, project-led course where you’ll be supported to develop the techniques needed to bring your own ideas to life.
Rather than following a rigid weekly program, students are guided individually according to their experience level, interests, and creative goals.
Techniques explored throughout the term may include:
• Hand-building - slab construction, coiling, pinch forms & sculptural assembly
• Wheel throwing foundations and form refinement
• Functional pottery forms including cups, bowls, and vessels
• Surface decoration using slips, underglazes, carving, textures & transfers
• Glazing techniques and glaze combinations
• Understanding clay bodies, firing, and ceramic processes
Students are encouraged to develop their own projects throughout the term - whether functional, decorative, or experimental - with personalised guidance and technical support along the way.
Term Fee - $650 (10 Weeks)
Includes:
• Professional instruction with Sue
• Use of pottery wheels, studio tools and equipment
• Access to studio glazes and shared surface decoration materials
• Storage of work during the term
• Kiln firing coordination and handling
Materials & Firing (Charged Separately)
To keep class fees fair and accessible, materials and firing are charged separately so you only pay for what you use.
This allows lighter users to keep costs lower while giving more ambitious makers freedom to create larger or more complex work.
Clay (10kg bags)
• BRT & Paper Clay - $40
• SES Clay - $30
Firing - $13 per kg, per firing
• Bisque firing - $13/kg
• Glaze firing - $13/kg
Each piece is fired twice.
A steady, skills-focused class for anyone wanting time, guidance, and space to develop confidence and grow their ceramic practice within a supportive studio community.
