WED AM - "Rothko" with Kristen Guest

Take a deep dive into the creative process and life of Mark Rothko for making intriguing abstract art .

In this class, we will cover:

• Rothko's creative process and life
• Rothko's connection with Impressionist, Claude Monet
• creating luminosity and trasparency
• layering with soft edges and thin paint applications
• Post-War American Art movements like Modern Art and Color Fields
• proportion and balance of colors in your art
• how to make emotive art that prompts an emotional response from its viewers

Students will walk away with many sketches from our weekly exercises and "homework" as well as a beautiful painting on a medium to large canvas using Rothko's techniques, style, and inspiration as our guide.

Supply List:

• bring all your painting supplies
• your sketchbook or a pad of mixed media paper
• glaze
• 3" or 4" hake brush
• 4-6 acrylic inks in your favorite colors
• 1 medium or large canvas, sized 30x30 and up! (30x40 is ideal)
• cotton rags or Blue Shop Towels
