WED AM - 9th Street Women: Level 3 with Kristen Guest

This one's for the Art History buffs!
Join Kristen as she guides you through select excerpts from the book, Ninth Street Women, as you discover some of the greatest artists of the Abstract Expressionism movement in the 1950s.
The title refers to the 1951 "Ninth Street Show," a pivotal and self-organized exhibition where these women showcased their work alongside male peers like Pollock and De Kooning.
Each week, we will dive into one artist—getting to know them more personally and learning how to do abstract techniques they were best known for using in their work.
1) Lee Krasner: a leader among artists and wife to Jackson Pollock.
2) Elaine de Kooning: a prolific painter, critic, and the "emotional center" of the movement.
3) Grace Hartigan: a painter who gained rapid acclaim in the 1950s and focused on intense, large-scale works.
4)Joan Mitchell: a painter with a fierce vision who moved between Chicago and New York.
5) Helen Frankenthaler: a revolutionary painter who developed a new "soak-stain" technique.
By the end of class, you will walk away with a finished abstract painting that combine these techniques (of your choosing) with your own painting style and subject matter.

Supply List for Students to Bring:

This is a studio class and students will be using their supplies on the first week.

• 1 medium stretched canvas (recommended size is 30" and up, painting larger like they did)
• variety of acrylic paint colors
• variety of brushes
• a few, basic mark making drawing materials
• palette knife
• palette paper
• rags or quality paper towels like Viva or Blue Shop
