Open the Door – Led by the energetic and inspiring Viviana Barnwell, the “Open the Door: Communication, Access & Inclusion” workshop is a vibrant celebration of disability awareness and creative expression. Through hands-on art activities, lively discussions, and moments of reflection, participants learn to recognize and break down barriers—both visible and invisible—that can prevent true inclusion. With activities like “Open the Door” and “My Hands Speak,” everyone can explore communication beyond words and discover that access is about more than ramps—it’s about creating a real sense of belonging. By the end, each attendee leaves empowered with new understanding and a personal commitment to opening doors for others in their schools, workplaces, and communities. This workshop is facilitated by Vivana Barnwell.
Viviana Barnwell is an immigrant from Colombia, a foreign-trained attorney with a U.S. LL.M., and a degree in languages. She is a longtime bilingual elementary educator and ESL program coordinator in a public school district. She is the parent of a young boy with multiple developmental disabilities, and a statewide advocate for people with disabilities and their families, with a particular focus on supporting monolingual Spanish-speaking families and recent immigrants. Viviana is a speaker, consultant, and advisor on accessibility, inclusion, disability rights, and navigating complex systems. She has completed extensive training in disability-related laws, culture, and systems, including through the renowned UC Davis MIND Institute. She brings her legal, educational, and advocacy experience together to help communities create more accessible, inclusive, and welcoming environments.
Creativity is Power – Express Yourself
Join WeCreate408, the free, online creativity challenge, inspiring and celebrating San José. As part of Arts, Culture, and Creativity Month, the Office of Cultural Affairs launched WeCreate408 in 2021. WeCreate408 is a month-long online challenge that inspires creativity and celebrates San José’s rich and diverse arts and culture. The Office of Cultural Affairs partners with dozens of San José arts organizations, businesses, and community groups on this initiative. The public is invited to sign up at WeCreate408.org to receive creative prompts in April for creative actions to do on their own and suggestions for creative activities around San José. People can take part at their own pace or whenever they feel inspired. Each prompt is open to interpretation. Everyone is welcome to participate; you don’t need to consider yourself an “artist” to take part. We encourage you to share your responses to the creative prompts on social media by using the hashtag #WeCreate408.
