Weaving Workshop by Oriana Loucaidou

In this hands-on weaving workshop, participants are invited to explore the expressive possibilities of textile making through a contemporary, intuitive approach to the loom. Drawing inspiration from Cypriot craft traditions, this session encourages each participant to experiment with colour, texture, and found materials to create a personal woven artwork.

Using simple, accessible looms, you will learn the fundamentals of weaving, from setting up the warp to building layered patterns, incorporating unconventional fibres such as ribbons, recycled fabrics, yarns, beads, and personal objects. The workshop centres on the idea of weaving as a form of storytelling—each gesture becoming a way of honouring memory, community, and individual creativity.

Whether you are a complete beginner or have previous experience with textiles, you will leave the session with a unique woven piece and a deeper understanding of how traditional craft can be transformed into a contemporary artistic expression. The environment is relaxed, inclusive, and collaborative, inviting participants to share stories, experiment freely, and reconnect with the tactile joy of making.

Named after the founding year of Manchester School of Art, we are an artist-led initiative that supports students and graduates as they transition from art school to the professional art world. Through free and affordable opportunities - including exhibitions, co-working sessions, workshops, and social events - we provide a supportive framework that enables emerging artists to develop confidence, expand their networks, and continue their creative practice beyond university.
