Weaving Weekend at Whyte Ave - Binakol Weaving Workshop @Old Strathcona

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH JUST ONE WORLD, come join us for a fun and a culturally enriching Binakol Weaving Workshop at Old Strathcona Performing Arts Centre!
Step into the world of optical illusion and heritage through one of Northern Luzon’s most iconic weaves—Binakol. Known for its mesmerizing spirals and protective symbolism, Binakol was traditionally woven to confuse evil spirits and protect the wearer.

In this workshop, participants will learn the history and cultural significance of the Binakol weave, especially the “kusikus” pattern. The session includes a guided, hands-on activity using a small frame loom to recreate this intricate design in a simplified form.

Open to all levels—no prior weaving experience needed. All materials are provided.

This workshop celebrates not just a craft, but a cultural story—one thread at a time.

What to expect in the Weave Your Way - Binakol Weaving Workshop:

✅ Materials provided and a loom to use during the workshop

☑️Hibla tote bag to store your unique handwoven piece on your way home

✅Lecture about the traditional looms and handwoven textiles of different regions of the Philippines

☑️Live demonstration and hands-on learning of the Binakol Textile

✅ A network of community-based advocacy-driven supporters

☑️ Portion of proceeds that goes back to the community partners of Hibla Philippines

✅ Opportunity to Explore “Binakol” textile and learn the context on what rituals it is used for

☑️ A safe space to explore your own culture and local textiles and their origins

✅ 10% of our Net Proceeds will be donated to a registered charity that supports Filipinos
