Weaving Plastic: Talk, Make, Collaborate

Join WIP resident Elise Marks Vazelakis for an artist talk, workshop, and weaving project exploring how discarded materials can be transformed through textile techniques. Elise will share how her practice reimagines found objects and repurposed materials using processes such as twining, knitting, crocheting, and weaving. Following the talk, participants will take part in a hands-on activity, learning to create a continuous strand of “plastic yarn” from recycled Amazon packaging. Together, participants will explore new material possibilities through hands-on making and collaboration, while considering creative approaches to reuse and sustainability.

*This workshop is designed to familiarize participants with a specific technique. Participants will not be taking a final product with them.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Elise Marks Vazelakis earned a BS from San Diego State University and an MFA in Fiber from California State University, Long Beach. She has had solo exhibitions in Dubai, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, and has participated in group exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Austin, Chicago, Toronto, Santa Fe, and Phoenix, among other cities. Her work is held in both private and public collections internationally.
