Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF) warmly invites you to explore our series of Masterclass events as part of the 2026 Public Program.
Learn from incredible artists, and be guided and inspired as they share their stories and knowledge of both ancient and contemporary techniques—then take home your own piece from the Fair!
Lead by Rose Wilfred of Numbulwar Numburindi Arts, join master weavers from the remote community of Numbulwar in South East Arnhem Land for a hands-on weaving circle.
Participants will learn traditional techniques passed down through generations and will weave with Maguj (pandanus) and Nanja (repurposed ghost nets).
Once a deadly threat to marine life, ghost nets are reclaimed by the artists and transformed into vessels of story and strength. As you weave, you're part of a living practice connecting people, place, and purpose.
The workshop provides an opportunity to sit with the artists, share stories, and take part in keeping Culture and Country strong.
Meet the Art Centre: Established in 2019, Numbulwar Numburindi Arts (NNA) is 100 per cent owned and controlled by the community. Born from the community’s desire to practice and engage with traditional culture, NNA is a space for artistic and cultural expression.
Be sure to stop by their DAAF booth and head to their website to learn more: www.numbulwar.com
DAAF’s Public Program Masterclasses have been developed with both artist and participant experiences in mind. Masterclasses have a three hour time slot allocated so that participants can feel comfortable and grasp new techniques with confidence. Participant numbers are also capped to ensure an intimate experience.

Brought to you by Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair, the Public Program is proudly supported by the Northern Territory Government through Tourism and Events NT, Creative Australia, Copyright Agency Cultural Fund, McDonald’s Group and premium media partner Peppermint Magazine.
