In this hands-on workshop, Mary Kaiser will guide participants through a two-step process for creating rich, layered effects on silk scarf blanks using fabric paint. The first step focuses on painting directly onto dry silk, as demonstrated, to explore color flow and surface design. After the paint is dried and heat-set, participants will move into a second, wet process—moistening the silk and applying additional layers of paint to achieve soft blends and luminous depth. Along the way, Mary will introduce a variety of techniques, including tie-dyeing and stamping, and will discuss ways to enhance and embellish finished scarves using stitching.
Originally from Detroit, Mary Kaiser has lived and worked in Birmingham, Alabama for the past thirty years. A multimedia textile artist, she creates richly layered work using appliqué, paint, and stitching, and also explores book arts, natural dyeing, and printmaking. Mary is a member of Paperworkers Local, and her work is available for purchase at Four Corners Gallery in Hoover. You can see more of her work on Instagram at @mediumandcarpenter.
