About this Event

You’ve seen a lot of life. You have wondered about your origins, your purpose and about where you’re headed when it’s all over. But have you stopped long enough to delve deeper into your treasure trove of hard-won experience and wisdom? Have you tapped into the pulse of your ancestral yearnings that is coursing through your veins in the present moment?

You have lived a unique life of wounding, resilience, joy and the unending quest for meaning. You are no longer young – there may be more of life behind you now, than there is ahead of you. Every success, dead end and trial has cut a new facet on the diamond in you and reflects the light in a new way. It is your path to share your love and your wisdom with the world through your creative practice.

This workshop cycle gently invites you to follow your deeper process as it unfolds moment to moment; and to find at the heart of your story an inexhaustible source of creative energy.

Together we will move, sit in stillness, sound aloud, stay in silence, put marks upon a page, wander and wonder, break bread and share around a fire. We will let the unfolding mystery within each of us guide us to express our Wealth of Life in our unique way.

We start at Halloween/Samhain/near the Day of the Dead and end near Candlemas/Imbolc, when the light starts to lift in the wheel of the year.

Join us, if you can, for all three workshops in the beautiful surroundings of Saddlescombe Farm.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop will be most suitable for people over 40 – in or near the second half of their lives. However, anyone who wishes to explore the accumulated hidden treasure (however joyous or painful) in their personal history is welcome.

Venue & how to get there

The Learning Barn at Saddlescombe Farm has disabled access and a disabled toilet. Cars can pull up right outside the front door. Loose gravel on a flat surface surrounds the Learning Barn, and it's wheelchair accessible.

Transport:

• We are organising a minibus from Brighton Station for those who need it. You can book this when selecting your tickets.
• You can get there by car. Paid parking on site.
• By bus: The 77 bus service travels up to Devil’s Dyke from Brighton city centre seven days a week in the summer, passing the pier and the train station. From the bus stop it is a gentle 20 minute walk to Saddlescombe along the South Downs Way.
  The number 17 bus from Brighton to Horsham will drop you at Poynings crossroad/ Rushfield roundabout, and it is approximately a mile’s walk from there.
• By train: Brighton train station and Hassocks train station are both 5 miles away from the venue. A train ticket gets you a 2-4-1 offer on adult single and return tickets for the 77 bus to Devil’s Dyke, or 1/3 off the standard single adult price.

Accessibility

The terrain can be uneven in places. There is an accessible toilet. Cars can come right up to the door for drop-off.

About Razia Aziz

Razia Aziz has a many ‘lives’: as a creative practitioner (word, song, music, performance); holistic coach, facilitator and organisational consultant; mother, partner & community builder. She has lived in or near the South Downs for over 30 years. Her most recent work includes Challé Gayé, a soundscape at the Chattri monument for the Witness Stand season at Brighton Festival 2022, with a recorded version created as part of the Dome Heritage Reveal project (2024) https://brightondome.org/heritage-stories/heritage-stories-reveal/reveal-razia-aziz-chale-gaye-they-have-departed-died/; Valley of Dreams/Wadi-e-Khwaab, a new myth of the Cuckmere Valley – of the We Hear You Now an audio trail in the Seven Sisters Country Park (2023) https://soundcloud.com/alinah-azadeh/valley-of-dreams_razia-aziz_we-hear-you-now-series; the soundtrack to two film poems – Salt, Snow, Earth and Ways of Seeing Trees (2025)

– created in collaboration with local poet Naomi Foyle and film maker Wendy Pye; and Pieces of the Moon, and as yet unpublished memoir about her journey of grief with her mother’s death.

Razia’s work is rooted in her British South Asian Muslim/interfaith heritage and is deeply influenced by the landscape of the Downs. It seeks to voice the vital relationship between human narratives & ancestry and the living world of which we are a part. Razia has made three albums of music (western and Hindustani), composed original music for theatre and (co)/written and performed two plays. She co-hosts spaces for women to wander and wonder in nature and sit in community around a fire.

These workshops are organised by Writing Our Legacy CIC and funded by Arts Council England (Writing Our Legacy's National Portfolio Organisation 2023-28).

Since 2012, Writing Our Legacy has supported Black, Asian and ethnically diverse writers, artists and communities through creative projects, workshops, performances and partnerships across Sussex and beyond.

What began as a grassroots initiative has grown into a nationally recognised arts and heritage organisation championing creativity, representation and connection.

All ticket purchases are non-refundable. As a small grassroots organisation, ticket income directly supports the delivery of our events and programmes.
