This documentary by award-winning director Stanley Nelson and Nicole London is a syncopated voyage through funk’s history, from its African and jazz roots to James Brown’s early work and the rise of Parliament Funkadelic. Distinctly urban, funk reflected a post-Civil Rights sensibility.
The film explores the symbiotic relationship between funk’s explosion and the political and racial dynamics of 1970s inner-city America. Funk music’s influence can felt to this day in hip hop, 1980s post punk and its periodic revivals in the 2000s and 2020s and recent electronic dance music.
Featuring archival performances from James Brown, Sly & the Family Stone, Parliament Funkadelic, Labelle, Fela Kuti, and interviews with contemporary musicians including Questlove, Prince Paul, and David Byrne, who discuss the vast constellation of funk, ranging from post-war politics, sociology, and science to the roots of the legendary rhythms.

Der Dokumentarfilm der preisgekrönten Regisseure Stanley Nelson und Nicole London ist eine rhythmische Reise durch die Geschichte des Funk, von seinen afrikanischen und Jazz-Wurzeln über die frühen Werke von James Brown bis zum Aufstieg von Parliament Funkadelic. Der Funk war eindeutig urban geprägt und spiegelte den Zeitgeist nach der Bürgerrechtsbewegung wider.
Der Film untersucht die symbiotische Beziehung zwischen der Funk-Explosion und den politischen Dynamiken in den innerstädtischen USA der 1970er Jahre. Der Einfluss der Funk-Musik ist bis heute im Hip-Hop, Post-Punk der 1980er Jahre und seinen periodischen Revivals in den 2000er und 2020er Jahren sowie in der aktuellen elektronischen Clubmusik spürbar.
Mit Archivaufnahmen von James Brown, Sly & the Family Stone, Parliament Funkadelic, Labelle, Fela Kuti sowie Interviews mit zeitgenössischen Musikern wie Questlove, Prince Paul und David Byrne, die über die vielfältigen Facetten des Funk diskutieren, von der Nachkriegspolitik über Soziologie und Wissenschaft bis zu den Wurzeln der legendären Rhythmen.
