Join us to sculpt your unique body out of cereal treats, explore body liberation, and build community over dessert. :)About this Event
The Sex Ed Bakeshop is partnering with YES! (Your Empowered Sexuality!) for this special recipe tasting, during which we are going to spend time with our bodies–exploring and recording our lines, curves, flats, abundant and/or missing parts by sculpting self portraits with cereal treats as our medium.
We Heart Fat is a recipe for talking about living in our bodies and proposes body liberation as a framework for moving forward. This recipe is part of a larger social practice project by the Sex Ed Bakeshop, called (WISER). This self-reflective activity is not only delicious (because we WILL eat as we sculpt!) but lays the foundation for discussing body biases, fatphobia, diet culture, disability, disordered eating, and body image and self esteem. We will guide you through this meditation on the body using personal narrative, current research, coffee/tea, and cereal treats as our fuel. Participants will contribute recipe feedback and be invited to share documentation of their self portraits and personal narratives for the online WISER We Heart Fat recipe archive. Everyone will leave with to-go tools, treats, and resources to continue exploring on their own.
Please note:
- While this workshop centers marginalized larger bodies, it is inclusive of all bodies and sizes.
- Because this workshop is about getting in touch with our bodies, there will be spaces with mirrors for participants to disrobe and study their bodies in private. We also encourage participants to wear a bathing suit under their clothes to sculpt in more body-revealing apparel if that’s comfortable, or to spend time naked in the mirror at home prior to the workshop (to gain a mental image of their bodies for their sculptures).
The is produced by Liz Slagus, a Brooklyn-based artist, sex educator, curator, and writer, who created the platform for art projects, conversations, and resource-sharing to normalize all topics related to sexuality. This metaphorical bakeshop is a space to learn, explore, and enjoy where sex and sexuality can be discussed without shame or hesitation. Our work promotes dialogue about the role of sexuality, with its multiple meanings and complexities, in our everyday lives. We believe that learning should be a delightful process, so we share what we know through collaborations with pastry chefs, designers, artists, sex educators, and the public in ways that promote autonomy, curiosity, and further exploration.
is a Philly-based nonprofit that provides anti-oppressive, consent-based, pleasure-centered sex ed to people of all ages.
