We Cannot Imagine Ourselves Happy or, Why I Hate CamusA polemical title for a polemical talk, join former MUPS secretary Beau Kent for a discussion about the reception of Albert Camus and narcissism in philosophy.
Albert Camus is very much a darling for philosophy newcomers and a particular pop culture intellectual milieu. But he is rarely, if at all, studied formally and so many never have the chance to seriously and critically engage with his work. This talk will take aim at some of Camus’ main arguments about meaning, experience and ethics in The Myth of Sisyphus and expose its charming traps. The floor will then be opened to discuss the philosophers that are typically enticing to newcomers, the unholy trio of Camus, Nietzsche and Marcus Aurelius. The hope will be that we will be able to recommend some alternative introductory texts for those wanting to dive deeper into philosophy
