March 10th-March 26th, public visiting hours 10am-5pm Mon-Sat. GLOBAL ART PROJECT collaborates with Grace Cathedral and the Cathedral School for Boys in San Francisco in an installation addressing human movement , migration, immigration and displacement, past and present, in a creative response to an immediate conceptual evacuation; the abandonment of all things familiar and of comfort in the event of forced migration-- an exercise by 4th and 8th grade students under the tutelage of artist / instructor William Jaggers, Lisa Rockefeller and Benjamin Lawrence teachers
at the school.
The GAP contribution comes from Mia Chambers and Carl Heyward who reprise the SLAVE SHIPS visual narrative accompanied with the COTTON PICKIN' CAKEWALK series of deceptively gilded and celebratory objects that mask a horrific legacy of the deprivation and humiliation of a people and culture.
WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS in all its iterations furthers GAP investigations into the CrossingBorders theme which includes borders or barriers related to geography, gender, politics, race, class, of the mind and of the spirit.
We ask your continued support in addressing these issues as communities, histories and connections are threatened worldwide via GoFundMe which allows us to travel this concept, its materials and message internationally.
Next : CrossingBorders : DIA DE LOS MUERTOS (the ultimate border)
projected for Nov-Dec 2027 in Mexico, City.
Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, as part of the Episcopal Diocese of California, actively advocates for immigrant rights, frequently partnering with interfaith organizations to address immigration reform, provide support, and oppose harsh enforcement measures. The cathedral often hosts workshops and discussions on "Migration with Dignity," focusing on justice for migrants and challenging policies that separate families.
Key initiatives regarding immigration and Grace Cathedral include:
Advocacy and Education: The Cathedral, along with the Episcopal Migration Caucus, supports "Migration with Dignity," a framework aimed at providing just treatment for migrants.
Partnerships: Grace Cathedral collaborates with community organizations, such as the Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity and local law schools, to hold workshops like "Immigration Now," which discuss legal developments and share stories of those impacted by immigration policies.
Pastoral Support: The clergy of Grace Cathedral have publicly spoken out against injustices, such as child detention, and have called for compassionate, humane treatment of all people, regardless of their immigration status.
The Forum: The Cathedral uses its "Forum" series to host discussions on critical social issues, including anti-Asian racism and, by extension, the experiences of Asian immigrants.
In addition to these, Grace Cathedral serves as a sanctuary-oriented space, often reflecting the broader Episcopal Church's stance on welcoming the stranger and advocating for comprehensive immigration reform.

PRESS RELEASE : Grace Cathedral
Inspired by The Global Art Project’s recent exhibit, “Crossing Borders: We Are All Immigrants,” and the Cathedral School for Boys and Grace Cathedral's shared dedication to art and the call for justice for immigrants, we are presenting WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS

The" WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS " exhibit will include work by CSB students on the theme of immigration justice, alongside works by artist and founder of The Global Art Project Carl Heyward and multidimensional artist, chef, and choreographer Mia Chambers.

The Global Art Project (GAP) is an international collaborative social art practice, connecting a wide range of international and US artists and their work -- encouraging the crossing of boundaries and borders, necessary for navigating the world.

On view will be Heyward’s monumental new work The Slave Ships, addressing the Atlantic Slave Trade through the use of a 400-year-old slave ship schematic drawing overlaid on a mirror finished metallic gold background. This, in conjunction with the uncannily alluring Cotton Pickin’ Cakewalk by Chambers, a towering 10-layer King Cotton cake, powerfully centers this exhibition.
