WDAV's Small Batch Concert Series: Charlotte Strings Collective

The Charlotte Strings Collective celebrates the music of Black composers through performance and education. Join us at Free Range Brewing Thursday, March 27 as this visionary ensemble makes its Small Batch concert series debut! Experience works by Joseph Bologne, Charlotte composer Madison Bush, and more in an innovative program featuring hip-hop artist YUNG Citizen and emerging poet Maurice J. Norman, a Davidson College alum and recipient of the ASC Emerging Creators Fellowship.

ABOUT THE CHARLOTTE STRINGS COLLECTIVE

The Charlotte Strings Collective is composed of students, faculty, and alumni from UNC Charlotte, Davidson College, and Winthrop University; students and alumni from Northwest School of the Arts; members of the Charlotte Symphony; local orchestra directors; freelance musicians; private string teachers; and public school music educators.

The group first performed together virtually in the Summer of 2020 as a musical affirmation that Black Lives Matter. Since then, they have performed at places and events such as the College Music Society National Conference, the American String Teachers Association National Conference, the North Carolina Music Educators Association Conference, the Jazz Room in Charlotte, UNC Charlotte, Winthrop University, Bridging Musical Worlds (a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.), I am Queen in collaboration with the Charlotte Symphony (a 2022 event that honored Black Women of Charlotte), the Tosco Music Party, as an opening act for the Fisk Jubilee Singers, the Charlotte SHOUT! Festival, the City of Charlotte's summer concert series at Five Points Plaza, the Community Building Initiative annual breakfast, and at the Black Notes Festival in Charlotte. .

ABOUT YUNG CITIZEN

Born Christopher Williams, YUNG Citizen is a recording artist and masterful producer based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Originally from Charlotte, YUNG made his mark on the city’s music scene by working with a variety of artists including Deniro Farrar, Jalen Santoy, Neako, Dexter Jordan, Deore, & Tecoby Hines. YUNG blends his own unique interpretations of alternative Hip Hop, R&B and Pop to create timeless masterpieces that will penetrate and refresh the inner soul. As founder of his own media company, Citizenship Music Group, YUNG Citizen’s ultimate goal is to create timeless music that inspires the world.

ABOUT MAURICE J. NORMAN

Maurice J. Norman is a writer, poet, and performer whose work bridges storytelling, ethnography, and Black cultural narratives. A Davidson College alum, he has earned local and international recognition, from winning a national poetry championship in Sydney, Australia, to receiving an Emerging Creators Fellowship in Charlotte, North Carolina. He’s currently touring an original large-scale arts and civic engagement initiative called Don't Lose Heart, an interdisciplinary project blending poetry, music, and community dialogue to spotlight an interwoven story of his own and neighborhood historic Black communities.
