Take your musicality beyond simply hitting the beat. In this session, we’ll explore how contrast, timing, movement quality, and pattern choices can help you connect more deeply with the music and create more dynamic, expressive dancing.
We’ll explore:
• Acceleration & deceleration - playing with speed and timing rather than always moving at the same pace• Rise & fall - using changes in level, energy, and body movement to reflect the music• Big ↔️ small and smooth ↔️ sharp - creating contrast through the size and quality of your movement• Movement ↔️ stillness - using pauses, suspension, and space to highlight musical moments• Angles & changing the slot - using direction and space as another way to interpret what you hear• Pattern work - learning to use patterns more intentionally and effectively to represent the music rather than simply moving through them• Musical textures & accents - listening for rhythms, instruments, vocals, breaks, and other details that can inspire your movement choices
Most importantly, we’ll learn to listen to music differently... to hear beyond the obvious beat and start identifying the different layers and moments within a song that can inspire your choices.
The goal is to move from simply dancing to the music to making intentional choices that allow your movement, timing, patterns, and energy to express what you hear.
