WAYNE HANCOCK | Sam Joens
Steel guitar. Upright bass. A voice cured on the long road out of Texas.
The King of Juke Joint Swing pulls into Cedar Rapids on Saturday, June 20.
Wayne Hancock has been working the road for thirty-plus years, carrying a sound that predates most of country radio and outlives most of what's come since — upright bass, steel guitar, an archtop slung low, and a voice cured by every honky-tonk between Texas and the Iowa state line. Hank III called him "the real deal."
The Ideal Theater & Bar, in NewBo, is exactly the room for it. A close room, low light, a decent whiskey selection, and a stage close enough to see the calluses on their hands. This is the kind of show that gets retold by the people who were there — to the people who weren't — for years.
Iowa's own Sam Joens opens the night with the kind of honest, hard-country songwriting that earned him a local following the slow way: one good room at a time.
