The C. William Gilchrist Museum of the Arts welcomes painters Wayne George and Raymond Burns for an exhibition celebrating realism, transportation, history, and the beauty found in both the extraordinary and everyday.
Washington, D.C.-area oil painter Raymond Burns explores active railyards, railroad museums, and abandoned railroad lines in search of what he calls “good rust.” His paintings transform weathered engines, cabooses, boxcars, railroad structures, and industrial details into studies of shape, color, texture, shadow, and light. Through his work, Burns encourages viewers to look beyond the utilitarian purpose of these machines and discover the character and unexpected beauty created through age and use.
Self-taught Maryland artist Wayne George works primarily in acrylic, creating realistic paintings inspired by aviation, trains, and landscapes. His subjects range from steam and diesel locomotives and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad to the C&O Canal, aviation, and landscapes from both Maryland and abroad. A United States Air Force veteran and artist member of the American Society of Aviation Artists, George has exhibited work throughout Maryland as well as internationally in the United Kingdom and Germany.
Together, George and Burns offer two distinct perspectives on subjects that carry stories of movement, industry, history, and place. Their work invites visitors to slow down and take another look at the machines and landscapes that have helped shape the world around us.
Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, October 17 from 5–7 PM and experience the exhibition in person. The show will remain on view at the Gilchrist through November 15, 2026.
