Watercolor Workshop with Artist Laurel Payne

*The cost includes the 2-hour workshop and a take-home kit of supplies to continue practicing watercoloring at home. Materials include: Professional-grade watercolor paper for use during the class; Watercolor travel kit (12 paints, case, paintbrush); drawing pencil; eraser.

Art can be intimidating. A blank paper can seem daunting, and watercolor can feel stuffy and heavy with technique. Let go of expectations. Move past the insecurity of where to begin by learning to move beyond the fear of making mistakes. This workshop will guide you in using a variety of watercolor techniques - traditional and unconventional, through loose and unplanned color applications, layering washes to create depth and color variation, and incorporating a variety of planned and unplanned patterns into your artwork. If you are curious about watercolor painting but afraid of traditional watercolor techniques, this is a workshop for you.

Workshop Purpose (A personal note): My pieces for Women’s Work are very personal in nature because they reflect my tendencies to seek perfection in myself and my desire to always be in control. It seems I can't do anything without giving 100% effort, no matter what. The purpose and meaning of this body of work is to express the difficulty of balancing my personal expectations while, ironically, using a technique which is notoriously difficult to control. Instead of fighting with my paint, I have learned how to let go of my expectations and accept the unexpected ways the water behaves to drive my final product. Watercolor painting has been an unexpected source of this cathartic act of letting go and working through unplanned processes to create a planned outcome. A process that is full of techniques I would love to share with others.

About the Artist: Laurel Payne is a visual artist who works primarily in watercolor, pen, and ink. Laurel is fascinated by the environment, human connections, and how experiences shape perception. She was born in Tulsa, OK and attended Oklahoma State University, earning a double major in Studio Art and Art History. Laurel has a Master of Arts in Teaching from Armstrong State University in Savannah, GA. She lives in Oklahoma City, where she teaches middle school math.
