EVENT GUIDELINES to keep in mind:
1. Event is FREE & open to the public, part of Waterbean Poetry's monthly poetry reading series that offers an INCLUSIVE, SAFE SPACE for all poets & friends of poetry. As your host, my MISSION is to foster diversity, kindness, community, & peace through poetry. Thank you for your support in making this mission possible.
2. OPEN MIC SIGN-UP: In-person only, by 7:00 (however, by 6:45 is recommended as spots fill quickly). Sign-up sheet is on table next to the stage. First come, first served, no holds. Please PRINT CLEARLY so I can read it, or I’ll move on to the next legible name. NOTE: If you participate in Open Mic, please stay to hear others share their work. We’re a community of poets, & supporting each other helps us all grow. (Featured Poets, please do NOT sign up on the Open Mic roster.)
3. Occasionally I will invite an emerging poet or two to SPOTLIGHT during Open Mic. They will kick off the Open Mic and have 10 minutes each to share their poetry. Others who sign up for Open Mic will follow, as per below. (NOT applicable to THIS event.)
4. Freedom of Speech: I do *not* support censorship. I do, however, support all participants using their best judgment on rare occasions when young children are present at the venue. Generally speaking, read the room before you read your work. Then exercise your poet voice & be heard!
5. EVENT FORMAT
* FEATURED PROGRAM begins at 7:10. Each featured poet has 20–30 minutes on stage at host’s discretion. Featured poets, I hope you’ll stay to enjoy the rest of the evening in support of other poets who came to support you. Reciprocity is always appreciated and encouraged.
* BREAK follows the featured program. We’ll take 15 minutes for book sales & signings, & to support the venue/baristas.
* OPEN MIC: Each reader has 3 to 5 minutes max (at host's discretion), i.e., up to two (2) pages/poems read or recited. If time is short, your host will adjust the limit to one (1) poem and 3 minutes. Please do NOT share more than two poems, regardless of time limit. Please skip intro/comments or be brief. Let your work stand on its own merit! Poetry only (no prose). Poems you read don’t need to be your own, but do give authors proper credit if you read someone else’s work. Featured Poets will not read in the Open Mic.
* We’ll make every effort to wrap up by 8:50—Waterbean Coffee closes at 9 PM.
6. Waterbean Poetry’s TINY TABLETOP LIBRARY is hereafter dedicated In Memory of Poet Mike James (1970–2023). It offers FREE poetry books, chapbooks, journals, & anthologies & is available for you to enjoy. Please consider donating works from your own poetry library to replenish the selection. When you finish reading, please pay it forward by sharing with someone else. See pinned post for full details.
7. Please SHARE this event if you can, &/or spread the word. If you’re not already on my email list, message me and I’ll add you before next month (or possibly in time for this month's reminder email).
Feel free to message me with any questions or feedback. Hope you’ll mark yourself GOING to this event & I’ll see you soon!
Peace & poetry for all,
Leslie
