Hello, Poets & Friends! Please join me at Waterbean Poetry Night on Wednesday, JULY 27th when I'll present a reading & book signing by this month’s Featured Poet: JOSEPH MILLS.
A faculty member at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, Joseph Mills has multiple volumes of poetry to his credit. His most recent is Bodies in Motion: Poems About Dance, published by Press 53 this spring. His book This Miraculous Turning earned the 2015 North Carolina Roanoke-Chowan Award for Poetry for its exploration of race & family. In 2019, Press 53 published Bleachers, Joe’s debut collection of fiction consisting of fifty-four linked stories that take place during a youth soccer game. Much more about Joe & his work can be found at www.josephrobertmills.com.
EVENT DETAILS & REMINDERS:
1. MASKS. Mecklenburg County's COVID-19 mask mandate was lifted on February 26. HOWEVER, in the interest of protecting our more vulnerable patrons, wearing face masks is still strongly recommended—fully covering mouth & nose—except while drinking or eating. If you need a work-around, please discuss with your host before taking the stage to read. Note that it's an intimate space & we cannot be fully socially distanced at all times. Hand sanitizer is available at the sign-up table for your use during the evening. Your cooperation is very much appreciated.
2. OPEN MIC SIGN UP: in person by 7:10. Sign-up table is next to the stage. First come, first served, no holds. Please PRINT your name CLEARLY so I can read it, or I’ll move on to the next legible name. NOTE: If you participate in Open Mic, please stay to hear others share their work. We’re a community of poets, & supporting each other helps us all grow. (Featured Poets, please do NOT sign up on the Open Mic roster.)
3. CELL PHONES & ELECTRONIC DEVICES: please silence before event begins. If you receive an emergency call, please take it outside. The venue has two exits.
4. FEATURED PROGRAM: begins by 7:10. Following intros, each featured poet has twenty (20) minutes on stage (30, if a solo feature). Featured poets, I hope you’ll stay to enjoy the rest of the evening in support of other poets who came to support you. Reciprocity is always appreciated.
5. BREAK: after the featured program, we’ll take 15 minutes for book sales & signings, & to support venue/baristas.
6. MASK UP to MIC UP Open Mic: Each reader has up to five (5) minutes max (at host's discretion)—that’s about two pages read or recited. Please do NOT read more than two poems, regardless of time limit. Skip comments or be brief. Poetry only. The poems you read don’t need to be your own, but give authors credit if you read someone else’s work.
7. We’ll make every effort to wrap up by 8:50—Waterbean Coffee closes at 9 PM sharp.
8. TINY TABLETOP LIBRARY of FREE poetry books, journals & anthologies is available for you to peruse & enjoy, & considering donating to replenish the selection. See pinned post for full details.
9. Please support our wonderful venue (enjoy drinks & food!), tip hardworking baristas, & buy books from featured poet(s) if you’re able.
10. This event is FREE, INCLUSIVE, & open to the public.
My MISSION: Fostering diversity, kindness, community & peace through poetry ... since 2015.
Feel free to message me with any questions or feedback. Hope you’ll mark yourself GOING to this event & I’ll see you soon!
