About this Event
Waste Paper Opera Chorus are an experimental project choir based in London. Everyone is welcome to come and sing. The choir performs in art galleries, on recordings, and is the opera chorus for Waste Paper Opera (Fake & Extinct (2025) - TBA 21/Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Free to Choose (2023) – Singapore Art Museum, Dead Cat Bounce (2022) – Somerset House, Nottingham Contemporary).
In the first half of this session, we explore the voice, space, and time through a series of exercises, improvisations, and experimental repertoire works, as well as rounds and simple tunes. These exercises will be led by Waste Paper Opera directors James Oldham and Klara Kofen, and interdisciplinary improviser Anat Ben-David exploring ideas around the "thinking body".
In the second half, Dan Rhys Wakefield and Colette Sheddick explore a follow up session to their initial 2025 investigations of relations of tempo—exactness and inexactness—in an attempt to develop a vocal and spatial language for a forthcoming project.
Then, Cameron Graham develops chorus textures for a project inspired by the choreographic spectacle and lush melancholy of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Working through short scored sketches, we will use sustained vowel sounds to build collective vocal landscapes.
No specific experience is necessary for this session, but some experience in or passion for singing is desirable.
The session takes place at Machinaloci Space – a brand new space within the Raleigh Chapel building in Stoke Newington https://www.machinaloci.com/
