Hello Ward County 4-H Families and Club Leaders:
As we gear up for Ward County 4-H 2026 Achievement Days, we are excited to announce our upcoming Dog Practice Days
These sessions are a great opportunity for both 4-H members and their dogs to build skills, strengthen their bond, and enjoy quality training time together. Whether you are new to dog handling or have experience, there will be something for everyone! These practices can be a fun rewarding activity for both the dog and the handler. It encourages responsible dog ownership and is chance to show the dogs intelligence and athleticism.
• Who: Open to all Ward County 4-H members (4-H ages 5 to 18)
• When: 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm
o Showmanship on May 27
o Obedience on June 2
• Where: NDSU Extension Ward County, 900 13th Street SE, Minot ND 58701
• Bring:
o Crate
o Dog Treats
o Leash
o Scat Sacks
o Water Bowl
o Well-fitting Collar

Showmanship is a competition where handlers present their dogs in a ring, demonstrating their knowledge of handling, care, and breed standards, while also showcasing their teamwork with their dog. It is about how well you can show your dog, not how your dog matches breed standards.
Obedience is a competition where dog and handler teams are judged on their ability to perform a series of exercises. These exercises demonstrate the dog's trained behaviors. The goal is to showcase the dog's training and the teamwork between the dog and handler.
Dogs must be:
• at least 4 months old
• fully vaccinated for Rabies and Distemper (documentation required)
• well-behaved and under the handler’s control at all times
