Green spaces in large cities have become well known to provide excellent birding opportunities as neotropic migrants use this stop over habitat for refueling during their long travels. One of the best places in southern Maine for a close view of migrating songbirds–particularly warblers–is Portland’s Evergreen Cemetery. At the height of the migration season in mid-May it’s possible to see more than 20 warbler species in a single morning.
Join Maine Audubon’s Staff Naturalist Doug Hitchcox for free bird walks at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland during the peak of warbler migration. These walks will take place each weekday (Monday through Friday) from May 8 through 19. Please note: A staff photographer may be present on the walks.
Meet at the south end of the duck ponds (map) and we’ll spend two hours birding along the paths and trails of Evergreen. Come out for a morning of watching some of North America’s most beautiful birds as they stop to feed in this city-surrounded oasis, before moving on to their breeding grounds.
For anyone looking for an accessible alternative to these walks, we've partnered with Portland Wheelers to provide a Birding Ride on Thursdays (9 & 16 May): https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080F4AA5A82CA6FB6-47473311-birding#/
