Walthamstow's Hidden Gems

One of the most charming and oldest villages in London, the original settlement was established by 1086. Walthamstow village is a little slice of country life in London, with many reminders of its growth over the last few centuries. We visit the workhouse, now a museum, almshouses of 1795 and model cottages of 1862. A neoclassical villa is next to a parade of shops which retain their Victorian character. Schools, the hospital and old town hall show the Victorian development of the area, and in a row of old warehouse/garage buildings, God's Own Junk Yard is a vibrant gallery of neon art. The traditional Nag's Head pub leads us towards the ancient parish church via a 15th century timber-framed house and we end at the home of the painter and designer William Morris, now a gallery of his work. Cllr Elizabeth Baptiste, the Mayor of Waltham Forest, will join us on this fascinating walk.

We will collect envelope donations to the Sickle Cell Society during the walk. We ask a minimum of £10 from waged people.
