Walter Salas-HumaraBorn to Cuban exiles and raised in Fort Lauderdale, founded The Silos in 1985 after cutting his teeth in Gainesville’s college scene. Blending Southern rock warmth with New York’s avant-garde edge, The Silos’ early albums—About Her Steps (1986), Cuba (1987), and The Silos (1990)—became cornerstones of the emerging alt-country movement, earning Rolling Stone’s 1987 Critics’ Poll for Best New American Band.
Over the decades, Salas-Humara has collaborated with Alejandro Escovedo, Michael Hall, and many others, releasing acclaimed records like Hasta la Victoria!, Curve and Shake, and WALTERIO. His music merges vivid storytelling, poetic realism, and raw emotion across folk, punk, and Americana traditions.
Also a visual artist, Salas-Humara brings the same humor, heart, and authenticity to his paintings that define his songs—charting a lifelong exploration of American life, both sonic and visual.
