The unveiling party for Wall Poems of Racine No. 8 begins at 2 pm at 1236 13th Street, Racine, WI. The wall poem is on the south facade of the building, facing Washington Avenue. Street parking is available on 13th Street and Washington Avenue. Please do NOT park off street in front of the mural.
A brief history of the project will be shared, and the featured poet will recite her poem. Wall Poems of Racine No. 8 features an excerpt from Monica Thomas' poem “Rooftop.” UW-Parkside student Sophia Lefeber created the design in Professor Carey Watters’ graphic design course. Building owner Fox Grace offered a wall of their Pawstar RE building for the installation of the mural. Dean Tawwater of Tawwater Sign Company painted the mural. Funding was provided by the Uptown BID, Jeff and Mary Siuta, and the Osborne and Scekic Family Foundation through the Racine Arts Council.
Wall Poems of Racine is an ArtRoot project, in partnership with UW-Parkside and other community partners, that celebrates local literary talent. Each year, a poetry selection committee made up of local writers selects several poetry excerpts from Racine poets and provides them to advanced graphic design students in a community-based learning course at UW-Parkside. A design review committee that includes the building owners and community representatives chooses one or two final designs for installation based on the number of walls available that year.
Building owners with a wall in good condition who are interested in having a Wall Poem painted on their building should use the Contact page at https://www.artroot.org/contact.
