Wall Bracing: Wind Bracing for Residential Construction and Load Path

Course Description

This course will help you to understand braced wall requirements and how they impact the design of a house.

Learning Objectives

• The architect will understand the need for wall bracing as defined by the IRC, and the limitations of the code
• The architect, given their understanding of the IRC, will be able to properly determine the circumscribed rectangle around the entire building
• The architect, given their understanding of the IRC, will be able to correctly calculate the needed length of wall bracing required
• The architect, given their understanding of the IRC, will properly identify the different types of wall bracing

Course Description

This course will help you to understand braced wall requirements and how they impact the design of a house.

Learning Objectives

• Locate and label braced wall panels within braced wall line locations on plans submitted for building permits
• Identify applications that are difficult to meet with prescriptive bracing methods and explore alternative solutions (narrow garage walls, window walls, two story walls, etc.)
• Utilize software tools to identify minimum braced wall length requirements
• Evaluate prefabricated engineered solutions and select an appropriate solution when you're building design precludes the use of prescriptive bracing
