Walking Tour - The Only Way Is Essex Road

We'll walk the full length of this street, from Islington Green up to its junction with Balls Pond Road (just over one mile) and along the way we will stop to look at historical sites and marvel at how this important road into London has changed throughout the centuries.

Find out about an innovative market, an early care home, various alcoholic beverages, Georgian lino and amazing Elizabethan establishments.

Admire a variety of interesting buildings and developments that tell us so much about the history of this road, with references to theatres and entertainment, social housing, sport and manufacture. We'll look at the bones of a swimming pool, a cloned church and an Egyptian Temple.

It's a marvellous mixed bag... but then so is Islington... and that's why we love it.

• The tour lasts just under two hours and starts not far from Angel tube station.

My guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. – in fact, the research never ends. The walks and talks I offer are all on subjects that intrigue me – each highlights a different facet of my personality. I am particularly interested in the architecture of our ever-changing streets and the little details on and above them.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements for this tour?

There is no minimum age – children aged 5 or younger are welcome at no charge. However, please note that all other children up to age 15 must be accompanied by an adult – one child per paying adult.

Where exactly does this tour start?

Details of the exact meeting point will be on your booking confirmation and ticket which will be sent via email. 

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Please don't waste time and resources printing out your ticket.I will have a list of attendees on the day, although it would be wise to make a note of your booking reference

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

As you can appreciate, transfers/reassignments do not apply to those who just do not show up.

However, in cases of illness or unforeseen circumstances I will be happy to transfer your booking to another of my walks on another date as long as you let me know at least two hours before your booked walk is due to start.

Alternatively ...  perhaps you might be able to offer your ticket to a friend ... please see the next question...

Is it OK if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

This is fine – just email/text me the name of the person who will be taking your place.

Is this tour suitable for wheelchairs?

The walk will be mostly on standard pavements and should not pose any problems further to those experienced on an average high street.
