About this Event

Add a splash of color on this tour of Washington, DC beyond those marble monuments. Explore feminist history through a queer lens and discover how Washington, DC has been a pivotal location for the LGBTQ+ community. Advocacy for equal rights, expressing non-conforming views, and enacting policy to protect civil rights is at the foundation of this city’s stories. Walk with your licensed professional tour guide throughout the Metro Center neighborhood rich with theaters, street art, and historic venues. Meet historical figures central to the early gay rights movement like Barbara Gittings and Frank Kameny, whose advocacy safeguarded the LGBTQ+ community through the Lavender Scare when homosexuals were being fired from their federal government jobs. We'll also introduce you to Princess We’wha who is identified as a "Two Spirit" in the Zuni culture. You'll be shocked to hear about Dr. Mary Edward Walker and her scandalous decision to wear pants! Together, we’ll contemplate President James Buchanan’s decision to never marry and how his niece would take over the role of first lady. Revisit these iconic DC sites with a fresh perspective. This experience is perfect for locals and visitors and everyone is welcome to participate on TOHO's Over The Rainbow tour.

This tour is led by TOHO Tour Guide Lindsey Horn. We are hosting in partnership with Philly's Beyond The Bell Tours. Here are other events to join throughout the weekend.
