Walking Tour of West Norwood Cemetery

The Friends of West Norwood Cemetery is a charity dedicated to the care and preservation of this extraordinary cemetery.

I am looking forward to welcoming you to West Norwood Cemetery, a place where history and stories come alive. Established in 1837 as the second of London's iconic Magnificent Seven cemeteries, this 40-acre site in the centre of town is more than just a resting place—it's a journey through time. Here, you'll discover the remarkable lives of people who shaped Victorian society, trailblazers of the Windrush generation, and visionaries who left their mark on medicine, exploration, literature, and art.

As we walk through the cemetery's stunning landscape, you'll encounter the names behind some of the nation's most beloved foods and uncover one of the most heart-wrenching love stories of the Victorian era. Along the way, you'll gain insight into the fascinating symbolism behind Victorian funerary practices and see how the Magnificent Seven cemeteries transformed the way people thought about death and mourning.

This is a chance to step into history and leave with a richer understanding of the extraordinary lives and legacies that continue to resonate today.

We will meet at the arched (main) entrance for a prompt 2:30pm start. If you have any mobility concerns, please get in touch with me and I can advise. Unfortunately, dogs (even on leads) are not allowed in the cemetery.

West Norwood Cemetery (SE27 9JU) is located next to St Luke's Church and West Norwood Library. Buses: 2, 68, 196, 315, 322, 432 and 468 (several of these routes go via Brixton Tube Station: 2, 196, 322, 432) or West Norwood Station (trains to and from London Bridge/Victoria). Limited off-street parking is available.
