About this Event
Put on your walking shoes and join us on this "special focus "tour of one of Washington, DC’s oldest military facilities!
In August 1814, veteran British troops descended on the American capital. The fledgling United States scrambled to assemble defenses to protect Washington and the various government activities scattered throughout the city. Washington Navy Yard and the surrounding neighborhoods were part of the flurry of activity, with sailors, marines, and militia members who worked on the yard called to its defense. At the same time, the yard commander made preparations to keep Navy property out of the hands of any possible British occupation. Come to the Washington Navy Yard for a special 210th-anniversary tour commemorating and recognizing the problematic decisions, harrowing stands, and the people who gave their all in the desperate defense of Washington in 1814.
Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Head coverings, sunscreen, and sunglasses can be helpful during the summer months. Please also consider bringing bottled water.
Parking: There is no parking at Washington Navy Yard; however, paid and free parking is located in various areas surrounding the yard.
Note: You can sign up for a morning tour at 10:30am, or an afternoon tour at 1:30pm. Meet your NMUSN tour guide on foot at the 11th and O St. SE gate at 10am for the morning tour, and 1pm for the afternoon tour. Please be prompt.
