About this Event

To recognize the significance of the Fell's Point neighborhood and Baltimore City to both the private life and public career of Frederick Douglass throughout his life author and tour guide John Muller will offer two separate walking tours in support of the celebration of 2026 Douglass Week in Baltimore, Maryland.

Learn about the the people and places that influenced the intellectual enlightenment of Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey in Fell's Point and communities of East Baltimore in the 1820s and 1830s.

The first tour will focus on the lasting impact of 1820s and 1830s Baltimore on the Eastern Shore-born Augustus Washington Bailey before he self-emancipated in September 1838 while the second tour while focus on the consequential relationships and associations Frederick Douglass maintained during the last thirty years of his life after making his first return to Baltimore in 1864.

A version of this walking tour has been offered by Lost History Associates since 2018 and has been featured by local print, radio and broadcast media. The tour has been part of educational programming for local schools, faith and community-based organizations and company retreats.

TOUR GUIDE:

John Muller, author of and, will lead a new walking tour "The Lost History of Frederick (Bailey) Douglass in Baltimore" using newly discovered information found in the Baltimore City Archives, Maryland Historical Society, Enoch Pratt Free Library, and private archives.

Muller has presented widely throughout the DC-Baltimore metropolitan area at venues including the Enoch Pratt Free Library, Library of Congress, DC Public Library, Newseum, Politics and Prose, American Library in Paris and local universities.

He is currently working on a book about the lost history of Frederick Douglass in Western Maryland. Muller has been featured on C-SPAN’s BookTV and C-SPAN’s American History TV, as well on the airwaves of NBC4, WBAL, WMAR-2, WAMU, WYPR and Delmarva Public Radio.
