In the middle of the Great Depression, Chicago hosted its second, lesser-known world’s fair, the 1933–34 A Century of Progress International Exposition. Despite the challenges visitors faced outside the fairgrounds, within them they encountered scientific marvels, changing cultural values, and brazen entertainments. While the fair looked to the future with optimism, its various international pavilions foretold conflicts to come. Join CHM director of exhibitions Paul Durica for a walking tour that explores the often-surprising legacy of Chicago’s second world’s fair.
$25; $22.50 members. Tour begins and ends at the front entrance of the Adler Planetarium, 1300 S. DuSable Lake Shore Dr., Chicago, IL 60605.
