About this Event

Join NYC H2O for Walking the Harlem River, a new series of walks engaging with the waterfront of the Harlem River in the Bronx. This walk will explore the history of lost waterways in Marble Hill and Kingsbridge, where the Harlem River was rerouted more than a century ago, and its tributaries filled in. Today, the shoreline is inaccessible, and the lowlands are prone to frequent flooding. We will follow the route of the proposed daylighting of Tibbetts Brook, which once flowed into Spuyten Duyvil Creek, and will consider how this buried waterway could be reconnected with the Harlem River, and become part of the proposed Harlem River Greenway.

This walk is designed and led by Nathan Kensinger, a journalist, photographer, filmmaker and curator, who has been documenting New York City’s changing waterfront for 15 years. More of his work can be seen at his website: www.nathankensinger.com

Walking the Harlem River is generously supported by a grant from the New York-New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program and the Hudson River Foundation. Please note: This walk is one way, starting in Marble Hill and ending in Van Cortlandt Park.
