About this Event

Great improv isn’t just about the people holding the spotlight — it’s about how the whole ensemble supports and elevates the stage. In this half-day workshop, you’ll dive deep into the art of scene support, learning how to step in seamlessly, build atmosphere, and make your scene partners look like geniuses.

Through practical exercises in timing, environmental support, and group dynamics, you’ll learn how to:

• Master the art of clean walk-ons and smooth walk-offs that enrich the scene without taking over
• Build rich scene atmosphere and physical environment to ground the action
• Use “pimping” constructively to bring out the best in your scene partners
• Recognize when to ask for support on stage—and how to jump in when others need help
• Read the needs of a longform scene from the sidelines and contribute with confidence
• Strengthen ensemble trust so every player feels backed up on stage

Pre-requisite

• Introduction to Improv (101) (or proof of equivalent)

100 series - Introductory

200 series - Intermediate

300 series - Advanced

Un-numbered - Electives

The 01, 02, 03 etc. defines the type of class.

Your teacher:
Jon Carstairs is a qualified teacher of 13 years. He combines a love of big characters, theatrical stagecraft and silly simplicity in his classroom to nurture student confidence and build skillsets. He believes strongly in nurturing the community, and runs workshops, jams and social events.

Jon has been with TBC Improv for 8 years, founded KinkyFish Improv, and started Edinburgh Improv Tales - a Victorian Edinburgh narrative show. He also improvises solo, performing OneMan OneProv.
