Walkability for Women in Milan | The STEP UP Project

'TT Talks’ by Transform Transport is a series of seminars revolving around all sorts of urban mobility issues. For this edition, the talk will introduce the scientific research project “STEP UP - Walkability for Women in Milan” (Grant No. 2022-1643), submitted under the call for proposals “INEQUALITIES RESEARCH - Generating new knowledge to reduce inequalities” and awarded by Fondazione Cariplo. Transform Transport will be coordinating STEP UP for 12 months in collaboration with TeMA Lab, Sex and the City, and Walk21 Foundation.

In line with the UN’s Sustainable Goals and the 15-minute city framework, STEP UP will help identify challenging areas or neighbourhoods of the city of Milan, which can serve as samples of analysis to develop a set of policy recommendations aimed at enhancing the level of walkability for women in cities. A series of gender-disaggregated data will be analysed to support the definition of guidelines and policies for the design of future transport services, focusing on the impact of individual characteristics of pedestrians in relation to their gender on the perceived level of walkability.

The seminar will focus on the role of tech and digital infrastructures in enabling safe urban experiences for women in cities. It is based on fruitful discussions between experts in the field to explore the potentials and limits of ICT tools and user-based technology applications in promoting urban safety. The seminar will also touch on the capacity of these tools to instigate corrective policy action and drive positive change in urban environments.
