The upper Coquet valley was guarded by the Drake Stone long before it was guarded by Harbottle Castle, and its 2 000 tonne mass still looms over the valley.
West Tynedale Health Walk Leaders and National Park Volunteers have designed and are leading walks suitable for people wanting an easy introduction to the inspirational landscapes of Northumberland National Park.
The upper Coquet valley was guarded by the Drake Stone long before it was guarded by Harbottle Castle, and its 2 000 tonne mass still looms over the valley. The walk will visit the Drake Stone and hear of its legendary powers, before visiting Harbottle Lake, one of the features of the Nature Reserve. From there, through conifer woods and estate roads the route returns to the valley and the meadows along the River Coquet. From Alwinton parish church we visit a 200-year-old lime kiln before following the left bank of the Coquet downstream, with views to Harbottle Castle, before crossing to Harbottle village, passing The Star pub and Harbottle Castle and thence to the car park
Distance: 4.75 miles
Terrain: Initially heather moorland footpaths climbing to the Drake Stone and on past Harbottle Lake, followed by a direct path through conifer woodland. Thereafter the route is all on estate roads, highway or farm tracks. There are moderate ascents and descents and a couple of places where it is likely to be wet and muddy underfoot. The walk finishes on a quiet tarmac road through Harbottle village.
Meeting place/walk start point: Forestry England car park, Harbottle Forest. Grid Reference NT925049
Postcode: NE65 7BB (although this is not particularly precise).
What three Words: ///presented.series.fetching
Getting there: Although the Upper Coquetdale 16 service serves Harbottle on Saturday, unfortunately the bus timetable is not compatible with the walk timing.
