About this Event

All are welcome to join the Walk for Reconciliation for an opportunity to reflect on the difficult history and atrocities of residential schools in Canada, the legacies of survivors, and steps we can take in the healing process as we move towards a stronger future together.

This annual Walk began in 2009, as a partnership between Trellis Society and the Aboriginal Friendship Center of Calgary, to commemorate Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s formal apology to the survivors of Indian Residential Schools. The Walk, originally held on June 11, was later moved to June 21, National Indigenous Peoples Day, to acknowledge the larger conversation and active movement towards Reconciliation.

Walk details:

June 21, 2023, which is also National Indigenous People’s Day.

8:00am: start walk at Harry Hays Building | 220 4 Ave SE

9:15am: walk ends at Fort Calgary | 950 9th Ave SE

9:30am: outdoor gathering with performances by drummers and dancers, and speakers

10:30am: community meal catered by Spolumbo’s for the first 200 participants

A huge thank you to our community partners for making this possible: Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary, Trellis Society, and Alberta Health Services!
