About this Event

Welcome to Waking Up to Change: A Maternal Health Forum & Book Release Party! Join us on Sunday, Oct 13th at 5:30 pm for an evening of insightful dialouge and celebration. Listen to moms share their stories, hear from experts in the field, and engage with us as we discuss how to imrove maternal health outcomes in our community.

Be sure to grab a copy of the newly released book, and mingle with the author while there too. Enjoy a night of refreshments, performances, giveaways and more. We can't wait to see you there!

Meet the Panelists:


  • Katina Bryant is the Visionary & CEO of Women Intercessors Showing Empathy (W.I.S.E), a faith-based nonprofit organization that seeks to educate and empower women to overcome barriers, become self-reliant, and establish and achieve their physical, mental, and spiritual goals. The org’s long-term goal is to secure moms and babies with homes, to help reduce infant mortality and to provide social-emotional and spiritual support to homeless pregnant and parenting young women. Katina has a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Behavioral Science and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership. She considers herself a parent educator, a community leader, and an advocate for underserved and at-risk populations. She is passionate about spiritual awareness, diversity, equity and inclusion, disability awareness, and overcoming grief and loss.   • Dr. Katy Gold is a board-certified family medicine physician who has provided prenatal, labor and delivery, and newborn care for more than 15 years. She serves as an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan, has a master's degree in social work, and completed two research fellowships. Research interests include obstetrics, health disparities, and mental health. Dr. Gold has volunteered at Luke since the clinic opened in 2016 and is passionate about helping Luke provide the highest quality of care, while ensuring patients are cared for with compassion and acceptance. She loves working with the dedicated team at Luke and is grateful to be able to provide this care.
  • Penny Armbruster has a background in international business, human resources and ministry start ups. Her lifelong desire is to celebrate and encourage women as they seek to "be all things" to the people they love and care for. Most recently Penny had been blessed to serve women in South West Detroit in her role as Executive Director at the Luke Clinic. She was instrumental in the visioning and initial startup of the clinic 6 years ago and is passionate about serving those who are most vulnerable in our society. By providing a safe and loving environment for women to find support, encouragement, and excellent medical care during their pregnancies she has found her dream vocation.
  • Terranie Clarke is an author and passionate advocate for equity in education and maternal health. Drawing on her own experiences, she is committed to raising awareness about the maternal health crisis in the U.S., particularly the disparities that impact Black women. Her book, Waking Up to Grace, shares her personal childbirth story and sheds light on the need for systemic change. Alongside her work as an author, she is the founder of The Heart Next Door, an organization dedicated to helping families thrive through literacy and love. Terranie is a graduate of Howard University and lives with her husband and two children, Revels and Rielle, who inspire her daily.
